Chronicle Books - The Explorer Series
Animals Charles Darwin Saw
Animals Marco Polo Saw

A continuation of the Explorers series by award-winning author Sandra Markle, Animals Charles Darwin Saw features many distinct creatures Darwin encountered during his worldwide voyage as a ship's naturalist. Animals Marco Polo Saw brings to life the amazing, exotic animals Marco Polo encountered during his explorations in Asia.  Through nimble writing and beautiful paintings, this series offers a new twist on familiar historical accounts.

Animals Charles Darwin Saw

On December 27, 1831, Charles Darwin set out to explore the world as a naturalist aboard the HMS Beagle.  While the expedition was originally planned to last two years, it lasted almost five, as the Beagle sailed across the Atlantic Ocean and around South America, and, having sailed around the world, returned to England via Tahiti and Australia.

Along the way, Darwin made amazing discoveries, including the sighting of exotic animals, never-seen-before insects, and fossilized bones from creatures people would have never imagined existed.  It was Darwin's detailed observations of plants and animals on his voyage that provided the basis for his theory of evolution by natural selection.

Animals Marco Polo Saw

In 1271, the great explorer Marco Polo set off on an adventure of a lifetime - travelling the Silk Road by horseback with his father and uncle, from Italy to Cathay (modern-day China) and beyond, to learn about the family's silk cloth business and to meet the great emperor of China - Kublai Khan.

As he travelled through Eastern Europe, the Middle East, across Mt. Ararat, and into the Far East, Marco Polo was amazed by the people he met, by how different the landscape looked, and by the many unusual animals he encountered along his great journey.  From giant Asian elephants to Persian lions, this is the story of the historic adventures of Marco Polo and the animals he saw along the way.
