Before you join the approximately quarter million collectors of autographs in the world you will need to decide which kind of autograph will be your specialty. Scientists, musicians, writers, actors, sports figures and politicians are just a few examples of the categories in which autographs are sought after.  Perhaps you are a fan of a particular spots team or you admire a particular film star. Deciding on your specialty won't take much consideration. Whether your prefer a particular person or a larger range of possibilities, once you have narrowed down your choices you will need to discover how you will obtain autographs for your collection. It is possible to request and receive an autograph directly from a celebrity. It is certainly more exciting and adds sentimental value to personally receive an autograph from someone you admire. Celebrities will often provide autographs to fans at sporting events, book signings, or at concerts. If it isn't possible for you to attend these events you may be able to obtain autographs through mail.

Once you have located the address of an agent, fan club, publisher, record label or movie studio associated with the celebrity, write a polite note and include a self-addressed envelope with your request.  This method is not a guarantee, but worth a try.  You may be surprised!

If these methods are not possible you can still add to your collection through purchasing an autograph from a dealer.  Autographs can be bought at flea markets, antique sales, through mail-order and through the Internet. Prices for autographs can vary from as little as a dollar to thousands of dollars.

Autograph value is determined by who the celebrity is, the condition of the signature and autograph, and what the signature is written on. The most valuable autographs tend to be historical photographs, documents, and typed or handwritten letters with original signatures. These  valuable specimens usually need to be acquired through dealers.
